         Lighting is illumination produced by artificial means to allow visibility in enclosures and at night.Over the ages,artificial lighting has undergone development.

        The earliest means of artificial lighting were the open fire,firebrands,and torches and the first lamp was made of dish of stone,clay,pottery and later metal,containing vegetable or animal oil and a wick.This was succeeded by the candle,and by the lantern.The Argand burner was an improved oil lamp with a burner and a chimney,and it was widely used after the Canadian geologist Abraham Gesner popularized the use of kerosene.By the late eighteenth century,coal gas was used as an illuminant.Examples of this include the Burner and the Welsbach mantle.

        The earliest electric lighting was the arc lamp,in which an electric current beidges a gap between two carbon rods and forms a bright discharge called an arc.Sir Humphry Davy,who experimented with this lamp,made a fine platinum wire incandescent-glow brightly-in air by passing a current through it.The open kind of the arc lamp was later enclosed in glass and made more practicable.During the same period various arc lamps were introduced.The first practical one was installed in a lighthouse at Dungeness,England,in 1862.In 1878,Charles Francis Brush produced the first commercially successful carbon-arc lamps used as street lanps.In 1878 and 1879,the British inventor Joseph Swan and the American inventor Thomas Edison simultaneously developed the carbon-filament lamp.Carbon filaments substituted for tungsten filaments in incandescent lamps in 1907;gas-filled incandescent pamps were developed in 1913;and the fluorescent lamp was introduced in 1938.In 1979,a compact fluorescent bulb that screwed into ordinary light fixture was introduced.It uses 75 percent less electricity and lasts ten times longer than the regular incandescent light bulbs.
