         Athens,the capital of Greece,is situated on the Attic plain on the Greek mainland and surrounded by many hills and four mountains.The highest one,Mt. Parnitha,can be seen from nearly every street in Athens.Two minor rivers,the Kifisos River in the west and the ILLisos River in the east,flow through the city.The port of Oiraeus,a separate city in ancient times,has now been absorbed into greater Athens.The ancient site of the city is centered on the rocky hill of the Acropolis,on which the famous Parthenon is located.A bustling and cosmopolitan metropolis,Athens is central to economic activities and cultural life in Greece.

        Athens is rapidly becoming a leading business center in the European Union(EU)and is ranked the 32ņd-richest city in the world.Economic development aid provided by the EU has been a crucial source of funding for its ongoing construction projects to help with economic activities.Athens as the largest city in the country,has advanced transportation systems such as railways,ferries sailing to parts of the country from the port at Piraeus,taxis and public buses that must contend with heavily congested traffic,as well as the Athens Metro.A large portion of the industries in Greece is concentrated in and around Athens.These include textiles,cement,machinery,transportation equipment,printing,and publishing.

        Athens was a center for the arts,learning and philosophy.It was home of Plato,Aristotle.Socrates,Pericles,Sophocles,and many other prominent philosophers,writers,and politicians of the ancient world.It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western Civilization and the birthplace of democracy.Athens also has several major archeological as well as religious sites.The Acropolis is the best known one,a flat-topped hill capped with ruins of ancient temples,monuments and gateways to Athens,and the Panathenaic Stadium that was used for athletic competitions during ancient festivals.A few of the ancient religious buildings include medieval churches that survived the period in which Athens was the principal capital of the Byzantine Empire.The most notable of these are the Church of Panagia and the Church of Aghioi Theodoroi.
