The human brain is a grayish-pink,jellylike ball with many ridges and grooves on its surface. It is the control center for movement, sleep, hunger, thrist, emotions such as love, hatred, fear, anger, elation and sadness, and other important activities necessary for survival. It also receives and interprets the countless signals sent to it from other parts of the body and from the external environment.

The largest part of the brain is the cerebrum, making up about 85 percent of the weight of the entire brain.A thin layer of nerve cell bodies  called the cerebral cortex forms the outermost parts of the cerebrum. Most of the cerebrum beneath the cortex consists of the nerve cell fibers. Some connect parts of the cortex;others link the cortex with the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord. The cerebrum is divided by a fissure(large groove)into halves called the left cerebral hemisphere and the right cerebral hemisphere. These are connected by bundles of nerve fibers, the largest of which is the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere is divided into four lobes and and each lobe is named after the bone of the skull that lies above it.

The second part of the brain, the cerebellum,is located below the back part of the cerebrum. It is responsible for balance, posture, and the coordination of movement. The cerebellum consists of a large mass of closely packed folia, leaflike bundles of nerve cells. It has right and left hemispheres that are joined by a finger-shaped structure called vermis.Nerve pathways connect the right half of the cerebellum with the cerebral hemisphere and the right side of the body.Pathways from the left half connect with the right cerebral hemisphere and the left side of the body.

The brain stem, the third part of the brain,is a stalk-like structure located at the front part of the cerebellum. It links the cerebrum to the spinal cord and controls various autoatic as well as motoric functions.Lying between and below midbrain, pons and modula ablongata. Those three are connected to the cerebellum by nerve bundles called cerebellar preduncles.
