Rabies is a contagious infection of the central nervous system, caused by a specific virus known as rhabdovirus, and is almost always fatal when vaccine is not administered right away.In most cases, the transmission of this virus begins when the saliva of an infected host enters an uninfected human or animal through a bite.Since the virus is also airborne, rabies infection can also develop in uninfected humans or animal after breathing the air,for instance,in a cave that houses a large number of infected bats.It takes 3-12 weeks for the virus to incubate in the new host.
In humans, initial symptoms include irritation and pain at the site of the now healed bite wound, malaise, fever, and headache. This first stage lasts for about 2 daays, and in the next phase, the victim experiences as period of excitation,in which he or she becomes irritable, frenzied, anxious, and hypersensitive, and this condition may be intensified by difficult breathing and swallowing. The victim is extremely thirsty but experiences spasms of the larynx when water is presented or even mentioned;hence, the original name of the disease is hydrophobia(Greek hydro meaning water and phobos, meaning fear)This episode lasts for about 3 to 5 days and usually terminates in death from a convulsive seizure or from cardiac or respiratoryfailure.
In animals, rabies takes two forms:furious or irritable rabies and dumb or paralytic rabies. The stage of furious rabies are similar to those through which an infected human passes. The difference lies in the stage of excitation, during which the animal runs wildly, biting and snapping at any living thing in its path.In dumb rabies, which is not as commom as furious rabies, the stage of excitation is very short or absent,so the paralytic stage sets in early in the disease, first attacking the muscles of the jaws and larynx(voice box in the throat).
