TRIK JITU MENGERJAKAN SOAL TOEFL (READING )DAN JAWABANNYA

Dolls, usually small and three-dimensioned figures resembling human beings, have been a part of human life since prehistoric times.Early dolls were probably made from materials such as clay, fur, rags, bone,or wood. Some of the exceptional dolls were made of ivory or wax.Dolls constructed of flat pieces of wood, painted with various designs and hair made of strings of clay or wooden beads, have often been found in Egyption children's graves dating from 3000 to 2000 B.C. The presence of such dolls in the tombs suggests that they were cherished possessions as well as cult objects, like the shawabtis,or tomb figures buried with adults to serve them in the afterworld. Most ancient dolls that were found in children's tombs were unpretentious and humble creations.Regardless of the materials, evidently, the main objective of making dolls was to produce a lifelike image.

Some ancient dolls made as early as 600 B.C.had movable limbs and removable garments to make them resemble human beings.Beginning in the fifteenth century, doll manufactures in England,France,Holland,Italy and Germany began to produce dolls dressed in fashions typical of their respective locales. The more ornate ones were often used by rulers and courtiers as gifts.

In the 1600's there were several improvements in manufacturing.Dolls' heads were fashioned of glazed stoneware;later, manufacturers used traganch(a gum derived from an Asian plant) and alabaster (a soft gypsum resembling marble). In 1636,a doll with glass eyes that moved was offered in Holland, and in 1675 another manufacturer created dolls that wore wigs of human hair.

Until the eighteenth century,Germany remained the leading producer of dolls and toys.Early in that century, people discovered that soft leather could be treated to feel like human skin, and it could be used to cover a doll's torso and limbs. In 1737,walking dolls were made in Paris.Events in the second half of the nineteenth century altered the course of the doll industry. In 1851,the Goodyear Rubber Company introduced vulcanized rubber dolls, and in 1860,the first baby doll that could sit upright was shown in Europe.Since then, dolls began to look, feel and move more like humans.
